How to Compare Two Lists

To compare two lists, click 'Tools > Compare'. Choose the lists that you want to compare by selecting different Workspace page-names in 'Compare Lists > List A' and 'Compare Lists > List B', then click the 'Compare Lists' button. When two lists are compared, the difference lines in the original Workspace pages will be color-highlighted. Note that this color-highlighting doesn't alter the text in any way. You can step through the differences found in List A or in List B by first selecting that page as the current page in the Workspace, and then stepping with the First/Next/Prev/Last buttons.

After comparing two lists, the results of the task will be opened in a new Workspace page. You can choose exactly what data is shown by selecting an option in the 'Compare Options' panel:

Fully Merged - Contains every unique line from List A and List B

Common in Both - Contains every unique line that is found in both List A and in List B

All Differences - Contains every unique line that only appears in List A or in List B

Unique in A - Contains every unique line that only appears in List A

Unique in B - Contains every unique line that only appears in List B

If you need to see the full hierarchy when comparing two lists, the easiest way to do that is to convert them to FlatFile. Here's the full workflow:

1/ Import your ORIGNAL list, and then click 'Convert Tab-Indented > Tab-Indented to FlatFile' to convert it to the FlatFile format. We will call this new list 'ORIGINAL_2'.

2/ Import your ALTERED list, and then click 'Convert Tab-Indented > Tab-Indented to FlatFile' to convert it to the FlatFile format. We will call this new list 'ALTERED_2'.

3/ Go to the 'Compare' tool page. For 'List A' choose 'ORIGINAL_2'. For 'List B' choose 'ALTERED_2'.

4/ Select 'Compare Options > Unique in B'.

5/ Click 'Compare Lists'. A new tab-page will open with all of the differences between your ORIGINAL and ALTERED lists, in FlatFile format.

This is a good eaxample of how to check what additions you have made to a list, assuming, of course, that you kept a copy of your original list before you started changing it!
